Exploration

Schaeffer was an engineer at French radio and had access to what almost nobody had: a studio with turntables, lacquer discs and the possibility of recording anything at all.

He recorded trains. Then he cut the fragments, assembled them in another order and played them back in closed grooves, the kind where the needle returns to the same point and repeats the piece indefinitely. That is where the loop comes from, and it is still the basic unit of almost all music produced today.

His idea was to hear sound separated from what produces it: not the train, but the noise of the train as an object with a shape of its own. For that it had to be recorded, because only when a sound can be repeated identically can it be looked at.

It was broadcast on the radio in October 1948 and called studies in noises.

He worked all his life in a public institution, with office equipment and during working hours.
