Description

Switched-On Bach came out in October 1968, recorded note by note on a monophonic Moog, with months between the first passes and the last. The print is those layers and the difference in time between them.

Exploration

The Moog of 1968 played one note at a time. One. To record a piece in four voices each voice had to be laid down separately and stacked on tape, and for them to sound together each had to be played at exactly the right tuning and tempo, because the machine drifted out of tune on its own as it warmed up.

Carlos spent months on that, track over track, with an eight-channel multitrack and an instrument that moved while the work was going on.

The record sold over a million copies and is the first electronic music record to do so. That money let the manufacturer stay in business.

What matters is not that it was Bach with new sounds. It is that it showed a synthetic sound could hold a whole musical line, with phrasing and direction, and not only produce effects.

She spent the following years on soundtracks that still sound like what the future sounds like in a film.
