Description

In I am sitting in a room, from 1969, Lucier recorded his voice, played it back in the same room and recorded it again, over and over, until only the room's own frequencies remained. The print is those repetitions, with nothing added.

Exploration

Lucier is sitting in a room different from the one you are in now. That is the first sentence, and what he says next is exactly what is going to happen: he will record his voice, play it back in the same room, record that playback and repeat until the room's own frequencies take over.

And so it goes. With each pass the space reinforces what suits it and damps the rest, so that the words dissolve into a few pure tones without anyone having added anything. There is only a voice, a room and repetition.

Lucier stammered. You can hear it in the recording, and by the last pass none of it is left.

He said the piece was not about his impediment but about the room, and also that it was a way of smoothing it out.

It is an acoustic experiment with a predictable result, and one of the few avant-garde pieces you can explain in full to anyone in thirty seconds.
