Description

In Sound Characters, from 1999, Amacher worked with tones the ear generates on its own on receiving certain frequencies: they sound inside the head and are not in the room. The print is those frequencies and the one that appears without being emitted.

Exploration

The ear is not only a receiver. When it receives certain pairs of high frequencies at sufficient volume, it produces tones of its own that do not exist in the air: they are generated inside, in the cochlea, and can be measured with a microphone in the ear canal because the ear emits them back out.

Amacher composed with that. Her pieces are built so that the listener manufactures part of the music, so that what sounds in the room and what is heard are not the same thing and there are tones nobody has emitted.

She insisted it was not an illusion or a psychological effect but a physical fact of the organ, and that her works only function at a particular volume and in a particular room.

She worked by installing loudspeakers through whole buildings for weeks, tuning each one to the structure of the place.

Almost none of her work is issued on disc, because a disc does not reproduce the condition that makes it exist.
