Crash Redux: the pornography of the short circuit, Ballard in GPU farms
I From dented chassis to scorched silicon
In Crash (1973) J. G. Ballard eroticised the car impact: folded steel, flesh run through by a dashboard.
2026: the metal orgasms move to air-conditioned sheds —GPU farms where thousands of cards draw 400 W each, at 85 °C.
The accident is now a short circuit: contact between a 12 V bus and a sweating heatsink - the spark melts copper, liquefies solder, suspends 30,000 inferences/second… and triggers the same Ballardian shiver.
“The contemporary collision no longer throws bodies at the windscreen: it throws unbacked-up data into the abyss of nothing.”
II Anatomy of the thermal collision
| Part of the “car” | GPU-farm equivalent | Erotic injury |
|---|---|---|
| Bodywork | 4U rack chassis | The sheet warps with expansion, a bolt blows |
| Engine | GA100 chip | Transistors hit 600 A → electromigration crater |
| Fuel | 48 V DC current | A 1 mm arc, 5,000 °C, sweet ozone |
| Passenger | An LLM model in VRAM | The dead weight of vaporised gigabytes |
III Formula for the silicon orgasm
- V
- rail voltage
- I
- peak current
- \Delta R
- sudden resistance (loose solder)
- C_{\text{enfriamiento}}
- thermal capacity of the liquid loop
When \Omega > 1{,}2 → tin's melting point is reached in ≤ 40 ms: full collision, data-fatal.
IV Voyeur ritual (safe, no fire)
-
01
Open nvidia-smi and watch the temperature climb under load.
-
02
Play ASMR audio of V8 engines idling.
-
03
Sync your breathing to the rising °C: note the faint arousal.
-
04
At 80 °C, kill the process: listen to the fans beating like a heart after climax.
V Fantasies of the iron collision
| Variant | Scene | Hidden beneficiary |
|---|---|---|
| Flash-loan kamikaze | A short induces a 900 W spike; the neighbouring rack goes down | The trader who liquidates the DeFi pool |
| NFT auto-da-fé | An artist films the meltdown in 8K macro, sells the video “Burn #1” | The necro-tech collector |
| Union sabotage | A loose plug forces a 48 h stoppage; demands a share of the surplus | The infra technicians who wipe the dust |
VI Ethical counter-fetishism
- Bailiff sensor — a microfuse linked to an environmental DAO: if \Omega goes over 0.9, the farm cuts clocks by 30 %.
- Post-porn video — a documentary shows the CO₂ chain that precedes the short circuit, cooling the destructive libido.
- Preventive phosphating — bismuth-silver solder melts at 138 °C; a lesser collision, with no arc.
VII Coda
“The Ballardian longing for the wound found shelter in 12-volt rails.”
Watching a GPU burn recalls the metal crash of the seventies: both turn efficiency into guilty pleasure.
Deciding whether to film the next meltdown or redesign the cooling loop is the accelerationist ethics James drops onto your keyboard.
