Temporada 5 · Descolonizar la Singularidad · JVV-T5-29
Reverse terraforming of suburbs: mycelium eats asphalt
I From concrete to the organic firebreak
Suburbs covered in asphalt form an impermeable blanket that worsens flooding and cuts the soil off.
Inspired by the mycelial ecology of Paul Stamets and the rhizome of Deleuze & Guattari, urban collectives plant mycelium bridges directly onto paved cracks.
The fungus Pleurotus ostreatus secretes ligninolytic enzymes that break down polymers and open fissures for grasses and lichens to come back through.
“Where an engineer sees pavement, the mycelium sees a feast of nutrients.”
II Urban inoculation recipe
| Ingredient | Proportion | Function in the asphalt | Practical note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sawdust aggregate | 500 g | Base substrate for mycelium | Carpentry waste |
| Mycelium of Pleurotus | 200 g | Fibrillar propagation | Home culture |
| Wheat bran | 300 g | Energy for the enzymes | In grain runs |
| Agar gel 1 % | 10 g/L | Fixing in the cracks | Initial moisturiser |
| Filtered rainwater | 2 L | Vehicle & humidity | Chlorine-free |
[Mix, fill the cracks, cover with permeable cloth and water once a day.]
III Formula for crack speed
- E_m
- mycelium efficiency [% coverage in the crack]
- D_c
- carbonate density [g/cm³] in the asphalt
- T_e
- exposure time [days]
When \Phi \ge 0.4, the pavement bursts into visible cracks of 3 mm a day or more, enough to seed grasses and lichens.
IV Field trials [2026–27]
| City | Pavement type | Mycelial coverage [7 d] | Average crack | Green impact |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Los Angeles | Micro-asphalt | 72 % | 4.1 mm/day | Clover shoots |
| Mexico City | Old cobblestone | 65 % | 3.3 mm/day | Blue lichens |
| Berlin | Smooth concrete | 58 % | 2.8 mm/day | Wild grasses |
| Mumbai | Ceramic tile | 49 % | 2.0 mm/day | Urban moss |
[Projects supported by community laboratories and green councils.]
V Home ritual: “guerrilla fungus”safe
-
01
Find a crack 1 cm wide or less in the pavement.
-
02
Fill it with the mycelium-sawdust mix up to surface level.
-
03
Cover with damp newspaper and a light weight [> 0.5 kg].
-
04
Spray with water daily; watch for the first white thread at 48 h.
-
05
On the seventh day, lift the paper — your mycelium has dug its first tunnel.
VI Risks & countermeasures
| Risk | Symptom | Rhizomatic countermeasure |
|---|---|---|
| Bacterial competition | The asphalt smells of rot | Add 5 % vinasse to acidify |
| Municipal pushback | Immediate removal order | Neighbourhood alliance + open letter |
| Pedestrian damage | Loose fragments | Sign the area and divert the path |
| Invasive mycelium | Unwanted displacement of roots | Delimit the area with a silicone barrier |
VII Coda
“Mycelium knows no borders: it drags its network under the asphalt and digs a trench for life.”
The reverse terraforming of suburbs promises no rainforest in a matter of hours, but it does promise fissures of hope where there was hermetic concrete.
Every crack sabotaged by the fungus is a rhizomatic project of urban decolonisation: a map of routes for the earth to get its voice back under our feet.
