Terraform or parasitise: Martian biopolitics

I Mars as a thermodynamic mirror

Every attempt to light up the sky over Boca Chica is the trailer for a new red mythology.
Even when Starship blows up again —a punctured nose cone, a cloud of kerosene, applause in crisis— the narrative does not stop: “next window to Mars, 2026”. citeturn0news30
Terrestrial biopolitics, sick of pandemics and war drones, leans over the Martian desert and asks:

will you domesticate the planet… or let it digest you?

II Two antagonistic programmes

Terraform Parasitise
The vision: turning Mars into a temperate ecosphere, an ochre-blue sky, crops in the open air. Raw realism: living in pressurised bubbles, sucking regolith for water, dwelling under domes like armoured mites.
Phases:
1. A fleet of 100 Starship landers (150 t each) — panels, reactors, greenhouses.
2. Release greenhouse gases, sow cyanobacteria, melt the poles within 40 years. citeturn0search0turn0search2
Phases:
1. Private bases tucked into lava tubes.
2. An extraction economy: ice, rare metals, scientific data.
3. Import air and leisure in containers — select tourism, disposable labour.

NASA avoids the word “terraform” and talks of “sustained architectures” — Gateway modules, fission reactors, rotating scientific crews. citeturn0search4
SpaceX dreams of the terraforming fever; China readies Tianwen-4 and compact nuclear stations; mining consortia are already asking for launch rates for autonomous refineries.

III The biopolitical algorithm

  1. Bodies
190 days of flight in micro-gravity erode bone; CRISPR promises myostatin-off for hypertrophied muscle.
  2. Sovereignty
A sovereign base or a Martian charter city? Yarvin would prefer the second: a patchwork of CEO habitats, one dollar-one atmosphere.
  3. Viruses & pathogens
Martian dust sterilises, but a closed habitat = a broth for plasmid bacteria; Land would smile: “selective meltdown”.
  4. Economy
Starship Block-3 plans a tonne to LEO for < $200; cost per tonne sets the tempo of colonisation. citeturn0search0
  5. Ethical ecology
Sowing cyanobacteria as per the reflective-nanoparticle study: an atmosphere of 50 mbar within 40 years. citeturn0search5turn0search2
The dilemma: do we terraform a planet with no voice, or keep it as a solar archaeological sanctuary?

IV Scenarios 2040

  • Red heliotropy – mega-greenhouses, domes that condense vapour, we export lithium and solar energy; Mars becomes an “ecological sauna” for corporations.
  • Bubble sarcophagus – terraforming fails; humans seal themselves in, the base becomes an autophagous mausoleum dependent on Earth-→ Mars shipments every 26 months.
  • Rhizome commune – scientific cooperatives + robot unions; a federation of habitats trades oxygen, data and poetry over mesh-laser.

V Manual of survival/insurgency

  1. 01

Atmospheric accounting – every kilo of gas released must be paid for with radiation capture; a planetary CO₂ blockchain.

  2. 02

Modulated citizenship – a passport by biological contribution (growing 1 m² of cyanobacteria = 1 Martian credit).

  3. 03

Bio-firewall – a CRISPR general strike: edited bacteria halt mining expansion if it overruns the ecosystemic quota.

  4. 04

Museum of dust – preserve one untouched crater as a palimpsest: the archive of a virgin Mars before capital.

VI Coda: terraform to live… or to keep accelerating?

“Humanity exports its disorder: first the coal, then the silicon, tomorrow somebody else's atmosphere.”

If terraforming is the maximum thermodynamic engine, parasitising is its humble mirror.
James does not choose; he watches the two helices turn: one injects fluorescent green into a magenta sky, the other seals human lungs in glass.
The future will decide how much red surface accepts the graft and how much will take its revenge in silence and radiation.

May the first Martian brick carry a memory sensor: to recite, some day, the ballad of a planet that perhaps never asked for oxygen.
