Description

Bard held in 2000 that on the network what counts is not what you have but where you are: one layer fixes attention and another receives it. Printed here are those two layers.

Exploration

The scheme has two layers and a single direction. Above, it is decided what circulates and with what priority; below, what circulates is received and consumed.

What separates one layer from the other is not ownership. It is position: who is known, what is filtered, what is let through.

Bard and Söderqvist wrote it in 2000, when the network still advertised itself as flat and the argument sounded like exaggeration. The thesis was that the abundance of information does not share out power but transfers it from whoever owns things to whoever decides what deserves attention.

Twenty-five years later curation is worth more than the catalogue. What is scarce is not the content but the band of minutes in which somebody looks.

The consumtariat of the lower layer is deprived of nothing. It receives more than it can process, and that is what it consists of.
