Exploration

Before writing the novel, Ballard ran the experiment. He exhibited three crashed cars in a London gallery, served wine, hired a topless interviewer to ask the guests what they felt, and waited.

What happened is that the public attacked the cars. They scratched them, tore parts off, turned one over, urinated inside. The show lasted a month and ended wrecked.

He described it not as vandalism but as confirmation. The hypothesis was that the car crash produces an excitement the culture does not allow itself to name; the room's reaction proved it better than any argument could.

Three years later he published the book and his editor sent the manuscript to an outside reader, who returned a famous note: the author is beyond psychiatric help, do not publish. Ballard took it as the best possible result.
