Description

In 1972 Guattari described desire as chained machines —medium, link, head— where the roles rotate and if one stops, all three stop. Printed here is that chain.

Exploration

Three pieces chained: one that produces, one that cuts the flow and one that consumes. The product of each feeds the next and the roles rotate according to where you look from.

What the chain denies is that desire is lack. If desire were a hole, it would have to be filled and the treatment would consist of restoring something. If it is production, the treatment is a breakdown provoked on purpose.

From there comes the clinical consequence Deleuze and Guattari drew in 1972: psychoanalysis does not cure the circuit, it reduces it to three family characters and cuts the connections it had outside.

The chain has no centre and no main piece. If one stops, all three stop, and none can declare itself the cause of the others.

Guattari was writing this while practising in a clinic where the kitchen shifts were part of the treatment.
