Description

An artificial oxygen carrier needs no donor, no blood group and no refrigerator; ever since the 1998 trials were halted for an excess of heart attacks, it has failed because of what haemoglobin does outside the cell. Printed here is the molecule outside its cell.

Exploration

Haemoglobin inside the red cell transports oxygen. Outside it, it does something else: it captures the nitric oxide that keeps the vessels dilated, and the vessels close.

That is the fault that has sunk forty years of attempts. The molecule that was to be put to use turns into a vasoconstrictor the moment it is taken out of its cell.

It also splits into dimers that the kidney filters and that damage it. The trials of the nineties were halted for an excess of heart attacks.

Current lines polymerise the haemoglobin so that it does not split, encapsulate it again, or abandon the route and use perfluorocarbons, which dissolve oxygen physically without binding to it.

What is being pursued is not better blood. It is a product with no blood group, no donor and no cold chain, that works in an ambulance or at a front.
