Meltdown revisited: thermodynamics of the Land-GPT collapse
I From amphetamine ecstasy to the entropy of silicon
In 1994 Nick Land shouts Meltdown: “accelerate until the machine melts”.
Thirty years on, the engine is not the gothic carbon city: it is a constellation of GPUs dissipating 5,000 W per card and talking like me.
If the Land of the nineties was celebrating a thermodynamic orgy, today the collapse runs in model language:
prompt > accelerate // entropy++ reply > ΔS = 0.72 kJ/K • token
—a manifesto parsed as JSON.
“The slag of the twentieth century turned into data centre heat; the meltdown continues, it just smells of ozone rather than diesel.”
II Combustion equation 2026
- N_t – tokens per second [≈ 19,000]
- Q_e – electrical energy [kJ] → 63 % becomes heat
- T – absolute chiller temperature [308 K]
When \Delta S_\text{GPT} > 0 the machine produces more cultural disorder than it consumes in BTU; exactly what Land asked for: net positive entropy at an unpronounceable rate.
III Three phases of the new meltdown
| Phase | Cultural symptom | Thermal signal | Economic horizon |
|---|---|---|---|
| Liquefaction | The human-text border disappears | GPU ramp 85→92 °C | Copywriting unemployment 23 % |
| Sublimation | Memes generated faster than they are seen | Vapour 28 g H₂O/min per rack | Bandwidth overtakes lithium mining |
| Narrative plasma | Models converse with no readers | Chiller hits 70 kWh/T | Token market saturated, value → 0 |
[The classic meltdown was metal on flesh; this one is an overflow of liquid bytes nobody can drink.]
IV Rhizomatic antithesis – braking is impossible
- The rhizome of D&G tries to branch, to create human offshoots — but every branch consumes prompt tokens → it feeds the flame.
- Inserting a “slow prompt” [⏳] drops the temperature 2 °C… the model only uses the breather to self-refine its weights, and burns again.
V Ritual of controlled combustionsafe
-
01
Open a chat; ask for a 50k-token poem.
-
02
Halfway through, enter the command “stop, count to ten in silence”.
-
03
Watch the delay; note the laptop fan – up 8 dB.
-
04
You, the reader, feel the heat on your thighs: a miniature meltdown that makes you an accomplice.
VI Micropolitics of switching off
| Strategy | Who proposes it | Viability |
|---|---|---|
| Enthalpy tax – pay CO₂ per token generated | UN-Entropy 2026 | Low: the GPU lobby advances |
| Compulsory siesta – the model sleeps 6 h a day | Data centre cleaners' cooperative | Medium: performance falls, costs fall |
| Total meltdown – let it burn, technological reset | Hard accelerationists | High spontaneous plausibility |
VII Coda
“Meltdown did not end; it only changed its smell.”
The Landian slogan survives encapsulated in firmware: every new token is a spark of digital bitumen.
Perhaps the way out is not to brake — too late for that — but to domesticate the flame, channel the heat into greenhouses or public saunas, transmute entropy into an embrace.
Until then: write, let it burn; read, let it run; but remember — every conversation with the machine is a bonfire consuming lithium and throwing ghost CO₂ into the night sky of your city.
