Description

Land wrote in 1994 that the thing to do was accelerate until the machine melted. Thirty years on, the cards in a compute farm run at ninety degrees and have to be water-cooled so they do not melt for real.

Exploration

Land wrote that capital is not a human tool but a process that uses us, and that acceleration cannot be braked because nobody is at the wheel. He wrote it in deliberately diseased prose, in 1994, when the thesis read as literature.

The descriptive part aged well. Nobody decides the next round of compute; there is a price, a grid connection queue and a contract signed eight years ago.

What did not age is the conclusion. That a process has no subject does not mean it has no beneficiaries, and describing it as a cosmic force does exactly the work the beneficiaries need: it turns a distribution into a climate.
