Exploration

Interleukin-2 is the signal by which an activated T lymphocyte orders the others to multiply. Given in quantity, that notice turns into a general mobilisation.

The regimen approved in 1992 consisted of repeated doses every eight hours in intensive care. The vessels turn permeable, fluid passes into the tissue and the patient swells, blood pressure falls and sometimes support is needed.

It was given until the body could take no more. That was the criterion.

It worked in fewer than one in ten, and in those the remission was complete and lasted decades. There was no way of knowing beforehand who they were.

It was the first proof that the immune system can eliminate an established tumour. Everything that came after tried to achieve that without the intensive care unit.
