Description

Since 1976 the tuberculosis vaccine has been given through a catheter inside the bladder to treat superficial cancer; it wakes the whole innate immunity and it is still not properly known why it works. Printed here is a complete living organism, not a molecule.

Exploration

It is not a molecule. It is a live mycobacterium, attenuated by two hundred and thirty successive passages in a potato culture with bile, between 1908 and 1921.

It is instilled by catheter and held in the bladder for a couple of hours. The bacterium adheres to the damaged urothelium, enters the tumour cells and sets off a complete immune response inside the bladder.

The tumour is not the target. What is provoked is a controlled infection in the organ, and the immune system levels everything it finds on the way.

It is the oldest immunotherapy still in use, since 1976, and it is not clear why it works better than what came after.

There have been worldwide shortages several times. Only a few manufacturers keep the strain and the procedure cannot be hurried.
