Description

In November 2023 the first gene editing therapy was approved: the patient's cells are taken out, a gene is cut in them and they are given back. Printed here is that cut outside the body.

Exploration

In sickle cell anaemia the gene for adult haemoglobin is mutated. The therapy approved in November 2023 does not repair it: it switches off another gene, the one that silences fetal haemoglobin.

Stem cells are drawn from the patient, a cut is made in that switch and they are given back. The cell, repairing the cut any way it can, spoils it, and the fetal gene is expressed again.

The fix consists of breaking something on purpose. No information is written: an order to switch off is destroyed.

Before the infusion the marrow has to be emptied with chemotherapy, with all the toxicity and the infertility that implies. The cut is made outside the body, where it can be checked.

It costs between two and three million dollars per patient. Most of the sufferers in the world are in countries where there is neither the hospital nor the sum.
