Description

Cantor proved in 1891 that some infinities are larger than others. His teacher Kronecker fought him to the end, and he spent his last thirty years going in and out of the Halle sanatorium, where he died in 1918.

Exploration

Cantor proved that the real numbers cannot be lined up against the naturals: there are more of the ones than of the others, even though both sets are infinite. Kronecker, who had been his teacher, spent years blocking his publications and his posts.

The comfortable version of this story is the misunderstood genius persecuted by a mediocrity. It is not that. Kronecker held that mathematics had to be built step by step from the integers and that an object you cannot construct does not exist. It is a coherent position, it has living heirs and it lost.

Almost nothing of that defeat is written into popular memory. We remember the madness of the one who won and forget the argument of the one who lost, which is the most efficient way of never having to answer it.
