Description

The 1925 principle allows one electron per state; without that rule matter would collapse to a point. Rather than give way on the conservation of energy, Pauli invented a particle. Printed here is that occupation.

Exploration

One electron per state and no more. It is not a force: it is a prohibition on occupying, and from it comes the fact that matter has volume.

Without that rule the electrons would all fall to the lowest level, there would be no periodic table and no chemistry, and any body would sink to a point.

The prohibition can be weighed. A white dwarf burns nothing any more and does not collapse because the electrons have nowhere to go: what holds up a burnt-out star the size of the Earth is a rule of bookkeeping.

Chandrasekhar calculated in 1930, aged nineteen and on his way to England by boat, that above a million four hundred thousand times the mass of the Sun the rule stops being enough. Eddington ridiculed him in public.

Above that limit the star goes on falling. The Nobel arrived fifty-three years later.
