Description

Klein points out that the equations work the same forwards and backwards —bar one minimal asymmetry measured in 1964— and that the only thing that will not be unwound is the only thing that makes sense to us. Printed here are the two directions.

Exploration

The fundamental equations work the same in both directions. Film the collision of two particles and run the tape backwards and nothing is seen that violates any law.

The only known asymmetry in the laws themselves appears in the decay of certain mesons, measured in 1964, and it is too small and too rare to explain anything that happens to us.

The arrow, then, is not in the laws: it is in the initial conditions. The universe began in an extraordinarily ordered state and has been spreading out ever since.

Klein separates two things the language confuses. The time of physics is a parameter that does not flow; what flows is becoming, and there is no equation that contains it.

The irreversible is not a defect of the description. It is the only thing that makes sense to someone who is inside.
