Description

Continuous physics predicted infinite energy; in the packets Planck introduced in 1900, the sum closes. There is no half quantum: it is a step that will not split. Printed here are the two curves.

Exploration

Continuous physics predicted that a hot body would radiate infinite energy at high frequencies. The measured curve did not do that: it rose, bent and fell.

Planck found the formula that fitted the curve before having an explanation, and then looked for what assumption produced it. The assumption was that energy is emitted in packets proportional to the frequency.

There is no half packet. The step does not split, and that is the entire content of the constant.

For years he himself took it for a calculating trick with no physical reality. Einstein took it seriously in 1905 and got the photoelectric effect out of it.

Since 2019 the kilogram is no longer a cylinder kept in Paris: it is defined by fixing the value of that constant and weighing against an electromagnetic force. The world's unit of mass hangs from the size of the step.
