Description

Grothendieck used to say that a problem is opened with hammer blows or left in water until it gives way on its own; with the schemes of 1958 he chose the second, and in 1966 he received the Fields Medal. Printed here are the two routes.

Exploration

Grothendieck described two ways of opening a nut. One is the hammer and the chisel. The other is to leave it for months in water, and when the moment comes it opens on its own with the pressure of the fingers.

He worked the second way: he did not attack the problem, he raised the level of generality until the problem stopped being special and the statement fell out as a particular case.

Schemes, from 1958, are that. The price was writing tens of thousands of pages of foundations before being able to prove anything with them.

The method has a property that is awkward for any calendar: it is not known when the nut gives way, and it cannot be hurried by soaking it more eagerly.

When Wiles closed Fermat's theorem in 1994, the scaffolding he used came from there. Nobody had soaked that nut with Fermat in mind.
