The unit Land set up at Warwick ran out of an office the university did not officially recognise. He resigned in 1998 and the thing went on operating without him for a few more years, until it dissolved on its own.

It is his own thesis applied to himself, and that is the only thing that makes it interesting. He held that processes have no subject, that nobody is driving, that thought is an effect of a system feeding back on itself. Then he set up something that did in fact keep working once he left.

What remained was not a school with members and refutable theses. It was a vocabulary, and a vocabulary lasts longer and answers for far less: it settles into the way things are named and no longer admits argument, because arguing with it means speaking it first. Today it circulates through forums and investment rooms that never cite where it came from.
