Description

The report von Neumann signed in 1945 described how a computer should be organised. It circulated before it was patented, and because it had circulated it fell into the public domain: almost every machine built since follows that architecture because nobody could charge for it.

Exploration

The 1945 draft described a machine where program and data share memory. Herman Goldstine circulated it with a single name on the cover, von Neumann's, and that prior distribution later made any patent impossible.

The most influential document in the history of computing became impossible to own through an administrative oversight, or through a calculation nobody has been able to prove.

It is worth thinking about against what came next. The architecture spread because nobody could charge for it. Today the equivalent layer —the model, the protocol, the ontology the agent runs on— is designed from day one so that somebody can. The difference is neither technical nor moral: it is that in 1945 the habit did not exist yet.
