Description

Bohm showed in 1980, with glycerine and a cylinder, that a stirred drop can be unwound: the information was still there, with no apparent order. Printed here are the two phases of that experiment.

Exploration

A cylinder of glycerine, an inner cylinder that turns and a drop of ink. On turning, the drop stretches until it disappears and the liquid is left uniform. Turning back the same number of times, the drop returns.

It had not come together again: it had never come apart. Glycerine is so viscous that the flow does not mix, only stretches, and each particle retraces its path exactly.

Bohm used the apparatus to say that an order can be present and not be visible, and that the unfolded is a particular case of the enfolded.

The trick has a limit and he knew it: diffusion works meanwhile and does not let itself be undone. Wait long enough and the drop no longer returns.

It is a tabletop demonstration that absence of apparent order and absence of order are not the same thing.
