Description

In his 1924 thesis de Broglie attributed a wave to every particle with mass; no measurement distinguishes one description from the other, and that is why nobody had seen it before. Printed here are the two readings superimposed.

Exploration

The 1924 thesis had a few pages and a single idea: if light, which was a wave, behaves as a particle, then matter, which was a particle, has a wave associated with it. The wavelength comes from dividing a constant by the momentum.

That is why nobody had seen it. For a body of human size the number falls so far below anything measurable that no experiment is possible.

For an electron, on the other hand, the wavelength is of the order of the picometre, a hundred thousand times smaller than that of visible light. An electron microscope does not see more detail because it magnifies more, but because the wave it illuminates with is shorter.

Davisson and Germer confirmed it in 1927 by accident, repairing a tube that had burst, when the annealing turned the nickel into a crystal that diffracted the electrons.

All the microscopy that resolves individual atoms works inside that one-line formula.
