Description

Bohr held in 1927 that wave and particle are complementary descriptions and that asking which way it went destroys the interference. Printed here are the two sets and their empty intersection.

Exploration

Complementarity means that the two descriptions share out the phenomenon and do not overlap at any point. Setting up the experiment to see the wave dismantles the one that saw the particle.

The rule stopped being philosophy when things could be built with it. In quantum cryptography, security does not depend on the key being hard to calculate but on reading it destroying it: whoever listens leaves a mark on the channel itself.

The first commercial key distributions over fibre are from the middle of the two thousands. The sales argument is exactly Bohr's, with an invoice.

What it does not give is a picture of what happens between two measurements. It is not that the datum is missing: the formalism has nowhere to put it.

Bohr held that that absence was the result, not a provisional stage. Almost a century later nobody has filled the gap.
