Description

Marie Curie's laboratory notebooks are still radioactive. They are kept in lead-lined boxes at the Bibliothèque nationale de France and anyone who wants to consult them signs a waiver. She died in 1934 of aplastic anaemia, before anyone had established the connection.

Exploration

Curie handled radium for thirty years with no protection, carried it in her pockets and kept it in her desk drawer for the pleasure of watching it glow in the dark. Her laboratory, her furniture and her books were left contaminated.

That is why the archive is literal. The notebooks do not describe radioactivity: they contain it, and will go on containing it for sixteen hundred years.

Every archive works like this, only it can almost never be measured. What gets kept drags along the conditions it was produced in —who paid, who was left out, what was accepted as normal— and those conditions stay active inside the document long after nobody remembers them. With Curie you can detect them with a counter. With the rest you have to deduce them.
