Exploration

Every continuous symmetry of a system produces a quantity that is conserved. If the laws are the same tomorrow as today, energy is conserved. If they are the same here as there, momentum. If they are indifferent to turning, angular momentum.

Conservation stops being a brute fact and becomes the consequence of an indifference.

That makes the theorem falsifiable, and it is worth reading it backwards. Where there is no symmetry there is no conservation law to demand.

The expanding universe is not the same tomorrow as today, and therefore there is no global conservation of energy. The light reaching us from distant galaxies has lost energy along the way and that energy has not gone anywhere: there is no ledger to enter it in.

Noether published this in 1918 in a faculty that did not allow her to be paid for teaching.
