Description

The equation Dirac wrote in 1928 demanded a particle identical to the electron and of opposite charge. Nobody had seen one. It turned up four years later. His colleagues measured his silence in units: one dirac was a word an hour.

Exploration

Dirac's equation had negative-energy solutions. Instead of discarding them as an artefact, he decided they described something real, and postulated a particle nobody had seen or looked for.

It appeared in 1932 in a cloud chamber. The mathematics had produced an object before the instrument did.

This happens, and it happens rarely. It is remembered because it came off: nobody remembers the dozens of particles demanded by equations that turned out to be artefacts, and that asymmetry of memory is what makes theoretical physics look prophetic when it is really a bet with a modest hit rate and an archive of failures nobody keeps.
