Description

Landau spent a year in the Lubyanka from 1938 and got out on a letter from Kapitsa to Stalin. In 1962 a car crash left him clinically dead for several minutes; he survived six more years and never did physics again. The print is his portrait among formulas and a star.

Exploration

Landau's course was ten exams that almost nobody passed. In thirty years forty-three people completed it, and that list worked as a credential across the whole country.

They arrested him in 1938 and he spent a year in the Lubyanka. He got out because Kapitsa wrote to Stalin offering his own liability in exchange, which almost nobody did for anybody in those years.

In 1962 a lorry hit the car he was travelling in. He was clinically dead several times, four doctors kept him alive in shifts for weeks, and he survived six more years unable to go back to work. They gave him the Nobel in the hospital bed.

What he left is not a theory but a method of selection: a scale for measuring who is good enough. The exam outlived the examiner, which is what usually happens with scales.
