Description

In 1986, before the commission investigating the Challenger, Feynman dropped an O-ring into a glass of iced water and showed live that it lost elasticity. The cause of the accident fitted in a glass and two minutes of television.

Exploration

The glass of iced water lasted two minutes and has been remembered for forty years. But Feynman's finding on that commission was not the O-ring: it was asking engineers and management separately what they thought the shuttle's odds of failure were.

The engineers said one in a hundred. Management said one in a hundred thousand. Three orders of magnitude apart inside the same organisation, about the same machine.

That is what killed seven people, and it does not fit in a glass. The televised demonstration was necessary because without it nobody would have read the appendix, and that necessity —that a fact needs spectacle in order to exist publicly— is the commission's real report.
