Fleming saw in 1928 the halo where the bacteria had stopped growing; there was no usable penicillin until 1941, and it was the work of other hands. Printed here is that halo and the thirteen years that were missing.

Exploration

In 1928 Fleming saw a transparent halo where the mould had fallen on the culture and the bacteria had stopped growing. He published, did not manage to purify the substance and let it be.

Usable penicillin arrived in 1941 and was the work of another team, at Oxford, with Florey and Chain. The strain that allowed it to be produced in quantity was not his: it turned up in a rotten melon from a market in Illinois.

Between the halo and the first ampoule there are thirteen years. It was not the idea that was missing: what was missing was an industry able to ferment and purify at scale, and the war built it.

In his Nobel speech, in 1945, Fleming warned that insufficient doses would select resistant bacteria and described how it would happen.

The description was correct. The halo goes on shrinking in the laboratories every year.
