Exploration

The fundamental equations of physics work the same forwards as backwards. Nothing in them tells before from after: it is thermodynamics, with its account of what can no longer be turned into work, that introduces a direction.

That leaves a crack between the theory and any human life. Nobody experiences a reversible variable; one ages in a single direction and no equation says so.

Klein has spent twenty years explaining that crack with a clarity that is not common. In 2022 he posted a photograph of a slice of chorizo claiming it was a star caught by a space telescope, to show how easily anything is believed if it arrives with the right label. Plenty of people believed it, and he had to apologise. It is the best argument he has made, and it did not fit in a book.
