Two terms and an order between them. Mutation is blind and whatever happens it anticipates nothing; selection invents nothing, it only discards. Out of the combination comes something that looks projected and is not.

Monod insisted that chance enters once only, at the origin of the variation, and that from there on everything is mechanical. Confusing the two moments is what produces the illusion of purpose.

The procedure was industrialised. Directed evolution makes enzymes by mutating a gene at random, screening thousands of variants and repeating the cycle with the best ones, without knowing why the ones that work do work.

Frances Arnold received the Nobel for that in 2018. It is design without a designer, carried out on purpose.

The enzymes in detergents and a good part of those in the pharmaceutical industry come out of that loop.
