Description

In a black hole every future points inwards; in the tiling Penrose published in 1974 every corner fits and the pattern never repeats. Printed here is that order without period.

Exploration

Two rhombuses and matching rules that forbid certain joins. With them the whole plane is covered leaving no gap and without the drawing ever repeating by translation.

It is not disorder. Any finite piece reappears infinitely many times, and in the transform there are clean peaks of fivefold symmetry, which crystallography had proved impossible.

In 1982 Shechtman obtained that diagram from an aluminium and manganese alloy. He was told to leave the group and Pauling maintained until his death that quasicrystals did not exist, only bad crystallographers.

The Nobel arrived in 2011. In 2009 the first natural quasicrystal was found in a meteorite from Chukotka.

A non-stick coating on a frying pan may be one of them: hard, poor conductors and with no planes to slide along.
