Description

Emmy Noether proved in 1918 that every symmetry of a physical system implies a conserved quantity. For years she taught at Göttingen unpaid and with her courses advertised under Hilbert's name, because the university would not admit women to the faculty.

Noether's theorem establishes that every continuous symmetry of a system corresponds to a conserved quantity. The conservation of energy is not a brute fact about the universe: it is the consequence of the laws not changing with time.

It is the result that holds up twentieth-century theoretical physics and it was proved by somebody Göttingen would not let draw a salary. For three years her courses were advertised under Hilbert's name.

The institution that denied her the post now teaches her theorem in the second year, and teaches it without mentioning the detail. It is not hypocrisy: it is an institution working normally, absorbing the result and expelling the conditions it was produced in, because the result serves it and the conditions accuse it.
