Description

In 1831 Faraday shifted attention from the bodies to the space between them: the field. Moving something inside it produces current, and everything else plugs into that. Printed here are those field lines.

Exploration

Faraday stopped looking at the bodies and looked at the space between them. The filings on the paper were not drawing the magnets: they were drawing something that was in the air and that he called lines of force.

From there comes a simple rule: moving a conductor across those lines produces current, and the current produced opposes the movement that generates it.

That opposition is what is paid for. A thermal power station burns coal to overcome it, and a regenerative brake uses it in reverse to recover the energy of a train coming into the station.

Faraday did not know how to write it in equations. Maxwell did it twenty years later and said he had merely translated.

Almost all the electricity in the world is still generated by turning a coil inside a field. What changes between a dam and a reactor is only what pushes the shaft.
