Bohm refused to testify before the House Un-American Activities Committee in 1949; he was arrested in 1950 and acquitted in 1951, but Princeton did not renew his contract and he ended up teaching in São Paulo. The print is his portrait beside a human figure shut inside a circle.

Exploration

Bohm was not thrown out for being wrong. He was thrown out for refusing to give names, and when he published again he did it from São Paulo, with his passport withdrawn.

His proposal was that particles do have a definite position and trajectory, and that indeterminacy describes our ignorance rather than the world. The orthodoxy had spent twenty years treating that question as closed, and the argument from authority was that it was already settled.

Today we know his formulation is consistent and makes the same predictions as the standard one. It was not refuted; it was ignored for thirty years, and a good part of that silence is better explained by a Committee file than by physics. A theory can lose without anyone beating it.
