Exploration

The product of the two indeterminacies does not fall below a fixed value. It is not a defect of the apparatus or a limit of technique: it is the minimum width the pair of magnitudes admits at once.

For half a century it was a statement about what cannot be known. Afterwards it turned into an engineering problem.

A gravitational wave detector measures displacements of thousandths of the diameter of a proton, and there the noise that dominates is that of the quantum vacuum itself striking the mirrors.

The limit is not broken, it is shared out. Squeezed light is injected, which narrows the indeterminacy in the magnitude of interest and widens it in the other, because the product has to be maintained.

Since 2019 the observatories work this way. The principle stopped being argued about and started being invoiced.
