Description

Haber directed the first chlorine release at Ypres in person, in April 1915; his wife, Clara Immerwahr, shot herself weeks later. In 1919 he received the 1918 Nobel in Chemistry for the synthesis of ammonia. The print is his portrait among gas masks and ears of wheat.

The same capacity did both things. Pulling nitrogen out of the air to make ammonia fed an enormous part of humanity that would not exist without synthetic fertiliser; half the nitrogen in a living human body today passed through that process. And the same chemistry of gases applied at the front produced Ypres.

Haber did not live that as a contradiction. He held that a scientist belongs to the world in peacetime and to his country in wartime, and he said it in so many words.

Clara Immerwahr, a chemist like him and the first woman to take a doctorate in chemistry at her university, shot herself with his service pistol a few days after the attack. He left for the eastern front the following morning.

The country he obeyed expelled him in 1933 for being a Jew, in spite of his conversion and his service in person. He died the next year in a Basel hotel, on his way nowhere.
