Description

Lise Meitner explained in 1938, from exile in Sweden, what her colleague had found in Berlin and could not interpret: the nucleus had split. The 1944 Nobel went to him alone.

Exploration

Hahn found barium where he expected radium and did not know what it meant. He wrote to Meitner, who was in exile in Sweden, and she worked it out with her nephew during a walk in the snow: the nucleus had split in two, and the missing mass was in the energy released.

She did the calculation on a scrap of paper resting on a tree trunk. The 1944 Nobel Prize in Chemistry went to Hahn alone.

The usual explanation is antisemitism and sexism, and it is true. But there is something simpler and more general: the prize went to whoever was in the building. The interpretation arrived by post from exile, and no system of recognition knows what to do with a contribution that has no postal address inside the laboratory.
