Description

In 1954, a four-week security hearing stripped Oppenheimer of the clearance to reach what he had built himself. The Department of Energy overturned that decision in 2022, sixty-eight years later and fifty-five after his death.

Oppenheimer was not investigated for building the bomb. He was investigated for what he said afterwards: that the next one, the thermonuclear, was not needed, and that the country should ask itself whether it wanted to have it.

The 1954 hearing did not judge his technical competence, which nobody disputed, but his friendships in the thirties and his change of mind. The verdict was that he could go on being a physicist but could not go on having access.

That division still holds and is hardly ever remarked on. The technician is allowed to make the thing and is relieved of the conversation about the thing. The strange part of the case is not the cruelty: it is that the system took nine years to need him and sixty-eight to admit it had been wrong.
