Description

Below one the reaction dies on its own; above it, it is no longer decided. The 1954 hearing that withdrew his clearance was not a trial either. Printed here are those two thresholds.

Exploration

The number is the quantity of neutrons of one generation that provoke the next. Below one, the reaction dies on its own; above it, it grows without anyone having time to intervene.

Between two generations of fast neutrons a ten-thousandth of a second passes. Nothing is governed with that.

What makes a reactor possible is that one neutron in every hundred and fifty arrives late, emitted seconds afterwards by the fission fragments. The machine keeps just below the threshold and leans on that delay, not on anybody's reflexes, to cross it.

All the room for manoeuvre of the civil nuclear industry fits inside that one in a hundred and fifty.

At Chernobyl the power multiplied by a hundred in four seconds. There was no delay left there to lean on.
