Description

Schrödinger published the cat in 1935 as an objection, not an illustration: he found it absurd that a theory should leave something alive and dead at once. The example he invented to ridicule the interpretation ended up as its emblem.

Schrödinger hated what his equation had made it possible to say. The cat was a reductio ad absurdum: if a theory holds that a system stays in superposition until somebody looks, then it also holds that there is an animal neither alive nor dead in a box, and that is plainly ridiculous.

The objection did not work. The example was so good that it came loose from the argument, and today it is quoted as a teaching illustration of the theory it meant to sink.

It is the mechanism by which almost everything spreads. A memorable criticism propagates what it attacks better than any reasoned defence, because what travels is the image and not the conclusion. Anyone who wants to bury an idea should describe it badly.
